International Council ICArb provides two routes to becoming a mediator; Ad Hoc and Institutional
1. Ad Hoc Mediator Training Program
Duration: 90 hrs
Format: Online and/or in-person
Fees: $3,600$
Weekly Structure:
- Two Lectures per Week:
Each lecture focuses on foundational concepts of mediation, conflict resolution, and communication skills. Topics include: - Introduction to mediation and its principles.
- Types of conflicts and their dynamics.
- Active listening and effective communication techniques.
- Neutrality and impartiality in mediation.
- Basic negotiation strategies.
- Ethical considerations in mediation.
- Open Discussions Between Lectures:
Participants engage in continuous discussions to: - Reflect on lecture content.
- Share personal experiences or case studies.
- Practice mediation skills in role-playing scenarios.
- Receive feedback from peers and instructors.
Key Components:
- Assignments:
Short assignments to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. - Role-Playing Exercises:
Simulated mediation sessions to practice skills. - Final Assessment:
A practical assessment where participants demonstrate their understanding of mediation techniques.
Outcome:
- Understanding of mediation principles and techniques.
- Ability to conduct conventional mediation independently.
- Certificate of Participation: Ad Hoc- Mediator.
2. Institutional Mediator Training Program
Duration: 55 hrs
Prerequisite: : Bachelor degree in any major.
Format: Online and/or in-person
Fees: $3,600
Weekly Structure:
- Two Lectures per Week:
Advanced topics are covered to deepen understanding and skills. Topics include: - Advanced negotiation techniques.
- Handling high-conflict situations.
- Cross-cultural mediation.
- Legal and procedural aspects of mediation.
- Mediation in specific contexts (e.g., workplace, family, community).
- Building a mediation practice.
- Open Discussions Between Lectures:
Participants engage in deeper discussions to: - Analyze complex case studies.
- Explore challenges in mediation.
- Develop advanced problem-solving skills.
- Receive mentorship from experienced mediators.
Key Components:
- Assignments:
In-depth assignments requiring critical thinking and application of advanced techniques. - Role-Playing Exercises:
Complex simulations to practice handling difficult mediation scenarios. - Mentorship:
One-on-one or group mentorship sessions with experienced mediators. - Final Assessment:
A comprehensive assessment, including a written exam and a practical mediation session.
Outcome:
- Advanced mediation skills and techniques.
- Listing as ICArb mediator. (Annual additional formation hours required)
- Ability to conduct conventional and judicial mediation sessions.
- Certificate of Participation: ICArb Institutional Mediator.
